Ask Penny the Penguin

May 7, 2008

Our own Penny the Peguin!

Dear Penny,

The guy I’m dating is still friends with his ex girlfriend; he told me once that they’re just friends and nothing is going on between them. Every single time I see them hanging out they are always talking, having a good time, laughing, and even hugging. I know that I am the jealous type of person and read way more into things than I should but should I believe what my boyfriend is telling me and just let them be friends? Or should I dump him because of what I believe?

Ex girlfriend hater

Dear Ex Girlfriend hater,

We think that you should talk to your boyfriend. Tell him how you’ve been feeling because he probably doesn’t exactly know how you feel. If he tells you that there is still something between them, then maybe you should let him go so that he can find out what that something is. If he tells you that nothing is going on, and feelings between him and his ex are strictly friend related, then you have nothing to be jealous about. Odds are that him and his ex girlfriend were better at being friends than boyfriend/girlfriend and decided to stay at that. Just remember things aren’t always what they seem.

XOXO Penny

Student Athletes At New Tech

May 5, 2008

I wanted to write a tribute to all the students who go to New Tech that play sports for Napa  and or Vintage. It’s a very hard thing to do, experiencing it myself, going to a school that doesn’t have a sports program and playing for schools that do. But in the end it’s all worth it because of all the things that you earn from sports: brotherhood, dicipline, athletic abilty, family, and the glory of winning. So I’ve gathered a list of all the people who have done this:

Alex St. Clair- Napa High Water Polo, Napa High Swim Team

Emma Witt- Napa High Water Polo, Napa High Swim Team

Erin Komplin- Napa High Water Polo, Napa High Swim Team

Mackenzie Whittaker-Vintage High Water Polo,Vintage High Swim Team

Stephanie Hernandez- Napa High Soccer

Lauren Waldenburg- Napa High Soccer

Emily Meehan- Napa High Golf

Rachael Smith- Vintage High Tennis

John Rex- Napa High Water Polo

Estaban Soria- Napa High Football, Napa High Water Polo

Robert Jones- JV Napa High Wrestling

Becky Heimbringr- Napa High Softball

Anthony- Vintage High Swimming

Oscar Camacho- Napa High Tennis

Spencer Klew- Napa High Football

Brandon Muela- Vintage High Vintage

Christopher Hernandez- Napa Swimming

Congratulations to all these people. Keep up the hard work!

Penny the Penguin

Dear Penny,

I’m going on a trip this summer, and I want to take some friends. The problem is that some of the people who I want to come don’t like each other. I consider everyone my friend, and I really want everyone to have a fun time. What can I do?

-Ethan

Dear Ethan,

I know exactly how you feel, and I know it’s hard to be stuck in the middle. What you should do is bring your friends together, and all of you should talk. Ask if it’s going to be a big problem between them if they do go, and just state how you feel about being in the middle. Another suggestion is to just invite your friends to come without knowing the other person is going, and then talk to all of them. The main thing need to do is talk. That’s going to be the most important thing you do. I know if I were your friend and knew a person I didn’t like was coming, I would give over my problems with that person so I can go on the trip and have a fun time. I hope this helps, and also have fun.

Best of Luck,

Penny

The Pop Culture of MAC Users

April 7, 2008

By: Alexander Kissinger

Macintosh users today are probably one of the most popularly growing crowds. Apple has sleek new looks, from their computers to their operating systems. But why are people so dazzled by OS X Leopard and all its iMac and Mac book friends? Well, there are a few reasons. I must stress that I am not referring to all Mac lovers out there, but to the ones that flame on message boards without logic behind their reasoning.Mac v. PC

First reason: Mac users mostly love OS X because it is visually pretty. It seems everyone is always ready to buy the new upgrade of OS X (out of the hundreds) simply because they add some new visual feature. That’s not really worth the money in my opinion.

Second reason: Macs do not crash. I personally have seen a Mac crash only once in my life (which was during a partition creation), but I see Macs having errors almost on a daily basis. For example, our school has a Mac Pro in the Digital Media room that is still fairly new. I was given the task of installing Photoshop CS3 onto it. Note that most of the slower computers (PCs) have CS3 installed on them and they run. The Mac Pro immediately gave an error message saying that the processor did not have SSE2. SSE2 stands for Streaming SIMD Extensions 2, which is one of the IA-32 SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) instruction sets. SSE2 was first introduced by Intel with the initial version of the Pentium 4 in 2001). Now for those who have kept up with Apple’s history, they personally made Mac-compatible hardware that was not compatible with PCs on purpose. They did not want to be called PCs (as if trying to show some sort of imaginary superiority). Now why would Apple make a Mac and a year later release software that was not compatible with it? The truth is marketing. They allowed the release of that software so that you would be forced to purchase the most current Intel-based Macs to install it. This is what disgusts me.

The final reason is that—and note that I am not speaking about every Mac user—it seems that almost every Mac user is only interested in the hype and doesn’t have much knowledge about computers. Take Bootcamp and Time Capsule, for instance. Bootcamp is nothing new; you always have been able to install multiple operating systems on computers. And Time Capsule is cool, but it’s not revolutionary. You have always been able to backup and archive you stuff onto hard drives, but this is why Apple has great marketing.

Cycle For Sight

Cycle for Sight

The fundraiser is to support the creation of a rehabilitation center for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. The ride benefits Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Pathway Home, a program of the Veterans Home of California at Yountville to help Iraq veterans recover from traumatic combat experiences.

There are three possible distances of your choice; they are 15, 25 and 50 miles and it is $25 to participate in the fundraiser. The ride will start at Justin Siena on April 26th. The 15 mile ride starts at 9:00 AM and passes along vineyards and wineries. The 25 mile ride starts at 8:30 and is a moderate ride with some elevation change pass vineyards and wineries. The 50 mile ride starts at 8:00 AM and is a challenging 1,700 ft. climb to the top of Mt. Veeder along the way passing vineyards and wineries.

So come and join in the fun!!!!!!
